<br />
<br />
<br />

。。<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinYddYgcvi2mY4jgYZCg_7_bYikXyNkbs9ynJE5THRxsvgfz6NUDFCj-IME1l9nMgT44vyGnEv3yg-S5UVng8B-VHUXbdWMo5qZ8YzGpSbTJLG1jqef4M_ukDNywtjWH9Lgrsa6czMiEoI/s1600/DSCN4160.JPG" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinYddYgcvi2mY4jgYZCg_7_bYikXyNkbs9ynJE5THRxsvgfz6NUDFCj-IME1l9nMgT44vyGnEv3yg-S5UVng8B-VHUXbdWMo5qZ8YzGpSbTJLG1jqef4M_ukDNywtjWH9Lgrsa6czMiEoI/s400/DSCN4160.JPG" width="300" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1fzZyXn49YVerCTDc85vQ-EpkzTkHjEEGCXA6KgKGG9yplG2HIoQmlRfjFMEjQSnYqQ9lm-U50TM4GdbxbmFmhr4auagUKtLx_0oXWRX8bc6VF1Fgf2VWO3J7KUMouBPdV7Y6duVrdYgC/s1600/DSCN4241.JPG" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1fzZyXn49YVerCTDc85vQ-EpkzTkHjEEGCXA6KgKGG9yplG2HIoQmlRfjFMEjQSnYqQ9lm-U50TM4GdbxbmFmhr4auagUKtLx_0oXWRX8bc6VF1Fgf2VWO3J7KUMouBPdV7Y6duVrdYgC/s320/DSCN4241.JPG" width="320" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGjeaaXZ7KaysJlcqtm3qTcQkxVqUXSPKHXBK_Sk6GxfVzLI2_5VAUMMs6BoaoEzP1cNVP3ps3iwpGJCkddJE3FxMiA3bso7Hi7uZXdUJLOArknDfqDt3kmKlnjRwLCAezT75XgCevKR3F/s1600/DSCN4474.JPG" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="271" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGjeaaXZ7KaysJlcqtm3qTcQkxVqUXSPKHXBK_Sk6GxfVzLI2_5VAUMMs6BoaoEzP1cNVP3ps3iwpGJCkddJE3FxMiA3bso7Hi7uZXdUJLOArknDfqDt3kmKlnjRwLCAezT75XgCevKR3F/s400/DSCN4474.JPG" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTq4hqVwcr7TqDKYyKDjVuB8QryyA8Dx2wquLvs823IEi_GMGLLH6xmywCHtbsiEa2kV3WUEmxNi-d2g8WG5rHzcN-EBzGuY1-iTAM_8mQBoNfRg2nYjuSFS97F6p4BSUkl76A9KECG0pw/s1600/DSCN4471.JPG" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTq4hqVwcr7TqDKYyKDjVuB8QryyA8Dx2wquLvs823IEi_GMGLLH6xmywCHtbsiEa2kV3WUEmxNi-d2g8WG5rHzcN-EBzGuY1-iTAM_8mQBoNfRg2nYjuSFS97F6p4BSUkl76A9KECG0pw/s400/DSCN4471.JPG" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
“米兰,米兰,我心中只有你!。。。”这是AC米兰的队歌开始一句。70后的人,是看着荷兰三剑客的AC米兰完成高中学习的,米兰也是90意大利之夏世界杯开幕的地方,中国开放后不太久,看到开幕式上的靓丽时装和意大利摇滚歌手让人难忘。从某种意义上电视上看到的米兰的是我那一拨人青春回忆的一部分。</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgabNq0dptlJYBC7K0L_C-7W-BaqJwjPj91U57F1uKDVmVzUsAqAOJoz6UBbvEfF06Uiw-jBOVd6czCVGtsWU3r5Bx7ag2QveaywSzOdSBLviYC2SKo6XMhVkaA61HPIsQ1SXcIC0kdqdp6/s1600/tier.JPG" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgabNq0dptlJYBC7K0L_C-7W-BaqJwjPj91U57F1uKDVmVzUsAqAOJoz6UBbvEfF06Uiw-jBOVd6czCVGtsWU3r5Bx7ag2QveaywSzOdSBLviYC2SKo6XMhVkaA61HPIsQ1SXcIC0kdqdp6/s400/tier.JPG" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
。。<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWtQVktZSKLqg_vjwnmJ6AS8oel_ttRJpnzUT3TOyPdzPMsVhGULYs9cWfeiFOqPaOXQPEciyl2LOmUp683lPirooA04O_zMk5GH73t_RDlf5A_Pp3gNy1ZyI1HMdTEWJXY3m6o72e2Z9F/s1600/DSCN7265.JPG" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWtQVktZSKLqg_vjwnmJ6AS8oel_ttRJpnzUT3TOyPdzPMsVhGULYs9cWfeiFOqPaOXQPEciyl2LOmUp683lPirooA04O_zMk5GH73t_RDlf5A_Pp3gNy1ZyI1HMdTEWJXY3m6o72e2Z9F/s400/DSCN7265.JPG" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />

<br />

<br />

<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

<br />

<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7HH5mxHw6l6dK24mi3JD0EhfSLHkuPyVTBc3UDdscMiSn8VTsRq4tdQo9dnNgELlKL1sjAzDtWNk9XQdLk_iocLPlBjNtlSabmlaRJU83X_UAALGXrHMc9c0mrnETqcQHFoCWQxmdI4v1/s1600/ld158115634ea7cc7d48cd169b228b70e-s-mcd8b9cb8ca9967af239653c3c07b42a2.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7HH5mxHw6l6dK24mi3JD0EhfSLHkuPyVTBc3UDdscMiSn8VTsRq4tdQo9dnNgELlKL1sjAzDtWNk9XQdLk_iocLPlBjNtlSabmlaRJU83X_UAALGXrHMc9c0mrnETqcQHFoCWQxmdI4v1/s400/ld158115634ea7cc7d48cd169b228b70e-s-mcd8b9cb8ca9967af239653c3c07b42a2.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg365GJo26NjhxbKnNYSyxSKzFe929dALRv_JfHsibhQSgj6GCRrnjIxlv9vGNIVgZzggJBdsmqhOByecBCSyx9RGiDgC9B5XbKdMnJkrldGv662AN75wNxm7S8IazIZHDwuK5ynBauGfm7/s1600/l38167ed553833c46f16f5e03a8958efd-s-m05d0eec03956c94f419c396ef2a62ebd.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg365GJo26NjhxbKnNYSyxSKzFe929dALRv_JfHsibhQSgj6GCRrnjIxlv9vGNIVgZzggJBdsmqhOByecBCSyx9RGiDgC9B5XbKdMnJkrldGv662AN75wNxm7S8IazIZHDwuK5ynBauGfm7/s400/l38167ed553833c46f16f5e03a8958efd-s-m05d0eec03956c94f419c396ef2a62ebd.jpg" width="360" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

<br />

<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />

<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
<b>维也纳</b><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />

<br />

</span></div>

<br />
<br />
Interesting moments from a game I played recently against a strong player. It shows the importance and difficulty in positional judgements, especially when you have to make important judgements one after another.<br />
<br />
My black is in trouble and it seems black has to choose between 1 (the game) or A. Since A is inviting white's obvious followup at B, I played 1 in the game. But still black's shapes look so weak...<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiY-pKmgd4maExDbTLhT789xwIpjwkYJNaXXFcBEcbT-YPOuSY9JTgTmGp78fCM9aqlYEJ-XCMchTJIuS3YmWIvNT12slPm7IbMrRx_FSDaFpSW70JbBCf1NEDP3DyJHGh5FV94WPQekG0M/s1600/2.png" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="318" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiY-pKmgd4maExDbTLhT789xwIpjwkYJNaXXFcBEcbT-YPOuSY9JTgTmGp78fCM9aqlYEJ-XCMchTJIuS3YmWIvNT12slPm7IbMrRx_FSDaFpSW70JbBCf1NEDP3DyJHGh5FV94WPQekG0M/s320/2.png" width="320" /></a><br />
<br />
White peeps at 1. White's plan is: if b answers at 2, white 3 will secure the centre. Black is not strong enough to capture 5 white stones on upper-right, and white has a clear lead.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBfGhz7gS4CMMUBunNhymaPi36hr1DhfmJDrRzyAhtypW9RD3Kw3vYGD08UxeqjyQaNMNDNS5aQi94JeNjLZT0nU13JtoiWO48XSA4_X7I0O_iO2896zkZ9vovO1_eVoRFSkluS6ht8N0O/s1600/3.png" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBfGhz7gS4CMMUBunNhymaPi36hr1DhfmJDrRzyAhtypW9RD3Kw3vYGD08UxeqjyQaNMNDNS5aQi94JeNjLZT0nU13JtoiWO48XSA4_X7I0O_iO2896zkZ9vovO1_eVoRFSkluS6ht8N0O/s320/3.png" width="320" /></a><br />
<br />
In the game I answer white's peep at 1 instead. White should still turn at A, and that way it will still be white's winning game. But even strong players will fall trap to the temptation of eating lots of stones. So my opponent plays at 2. Black pushes at 3...<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCJKXb1vmeM6RfFk3vS36it_6vbW9d_HICrWG_NcQMrjjHa6htN71yTM75UJNfScpUWPkw1wymHrcEtgXXtE-OoK9EtEZFkTjgp-nbmZr7SPtDN_YFU9PYeNHSAHR2f4gu2y5zFLTWmczQ/s1600/4.png" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="318" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCJKXb1vmeM6RfFk3vS36it_6vbW9d_HICrWG_NcQMrjjHa6htN71yTM75UJNfScpUWPkw1wymHrcEtgXXtE-OoK9EtEZFkTjgp-nbmZr7SPtDN_YFU9PYeNHSAHR2f4gu2y5zFLTWmczQ/s320/4.png" width="320" /></a><br />
<br />
After the net move black 4, black's sacrifice trap/plan is clear as daylight.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlUoilSIwbhrnKgQtqFo0uj1W0P9bv3lvcthXyGcLTwgJ5DExBD2JMlv9p-GbvXbLXv0u42xWTaZPOc7cfGRReg1diw9mR47U3TRwqOo2xHBR70Tf87wOc-EaefFKkPWSPBXuEmlP1Dlzc/s1600/5.png" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="319" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlUoilSIwbhrnKgQtqFo0uj1W0P9bv3lvcthXyGcLTwgJ5DExBD2JMlv9p-GbvXbLXv0u42xWTaZPOc7cfGRReg1diw9mR47U3TRwqOo2xHBR70Tf87wOc-EaefFKkPWSPBXuEmlP1Dlzc/s320/5.png" width="320" /></a><br />
<br />
This is the scene after the big trade. Quite a view indeed! It is almost an equal trade. But black successfully gets rid of the baggage, in sente.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAnp6IAgeJKFgJQXI9H7ynqw6__6_IgFXSGRhH7-p5ib3MFduYHizL05nPyHSjnaM4Hz-2vX0bWsWVtPSAhSyzHite9EsFIqizxRAJw4PjtNS16tnjJELrNvOH19RagUkYFNxdWoLsKsDD/s1600/6.png" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="319" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAnp6IAgeJKFgJQXI9H7ynqw6__6_IgFXSGRhH7-p5ib3MFduYHizL05nPyHSjnaM4Hz-2vX0bWsWVtPSAhSyzHite9EsFIqizxRAJw4PjtNS16tnjJELrNvOH19RagUkYFNxdWoLsKsDD/s320/6.png" width="320" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
At this point, an enclosure move in upper-left corner is the biggest. As my opponent points out later, black should either go straight at 5, or after the exchange 1 through 4. Note that even after white A, black can still make a ko in lower-left via B-C-D. This way black is completely back in game.<br />
<br />
Regrettably, in the game I thought it is bigger to live in lower-left corner. After the success in previous battle, my confidence is soaring and I have the unrealistic illusion that, if black lives in that corner, white's bottom will become a target So after 1 through 4 exchange, I spend another move in that corner. White gets to invade upper-left corner and resumes the lead.<br />
<br />
I find it especially hard to make a calm judgement call right after an exciting battle. Is it just in the game of Go or a human weakness in general, in real life?<br />

Here is a scenario in a game I played earlier this year.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyRy2BpzhLyjmIrvuTyia-6DoEjXCvZV3EYt8ts8X9JYB7I31fm0F4Pyz84FYNejuVU_WO3RoZHnAAGgFAxwWPAWivVpnYUFHUHsb86TxE4pnsexj64eY9fjkdhYVWmZb2IZiRogBbBAUO/s1600/var1.png" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyRy2BpzhLyjmIrvuTyia-6DoEjXCvZV3EYt8ts8X9JYB7I31fm0F4Pyz84FYNejuVU_WO3RoZHnAAGgFAxwWPAWivVpnYUFHUHsb86TxE4pnsexj64eY9fjkdhYVWmZb2IZiRogBbBAUO/s400/var1.png" width="398" /></a><br />
<br />
I was white. Black just played the circled move, and now white needs to settle down both the corner and the centre. Note that black's group on right is not strong, something for white to take advantage of.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdr74OgSr6PQFy3oowhAoUIYazL4spZFQ1sT7cdaPP2rMu2ERQblageyHXDO5th_VnvlZIjMwqR6r4s5lJzqaqdOakBaaYAJpftqdZiMTDo5tni-Wm63K1HjPmv8EuZSZ6VYETeC-g_YTI/s1600/var2.png" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="398" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdr74OgSr6PQFy3oowhAoUIYazL4spZFQ1sT7cdaPP2rMu2ERQblageyHXDO5th_VnvlZIjMwqR6r4s5lJzqaqdOakBaaYAJpftqdZiMTDo5tni-Wm63K1HjPmv8EuZSZ6VYETeC-g_YTI/s400/var2.png" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
The normal knight's move will not get white good results. Black can simply answer at 2, and now black is all connected and white has two weak groups. Similarly if white plays A black will also answer at 2.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjS76-5pPiTEy2Cl5xYc68YrzSY-H4L884CWv52_wO8DBimCKamGm0GWinvmSe0zJy-P3Ixj64Xu5ugPAP8P6I4Pdrvunyg8aSGwsygRZ81aPQU1UJYXz8vJZTvmW0FnM7vJaAkL2rqYejY/s1600/var3.png" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="398" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjS76-5pPiTEy2Cl5xYc68YrzSY-H4L884CWv52_wO8DBimCKamGm0GWinvmSe0zJy-P3Ixj64Xu5ugPAP8P6I4Pdrvunyg8aSGwsygRZ81aPQU1UJYXz8vJZTvmW0FnM7vJaAkL2rqYejY/s400/var3.png" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
It took me a few minutes to find this big knight's move which was my choice in the game. It makes a big difference because: 1) it helps the corner 3-3 stone to live without making that the only choice for white. 2) it puts more pressure on black's right group. 3) it demands immediate connection with white stones in the centre.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRPUtTPW3fCg6rx2Zxb-yhKZtG9JnMHR0z-3h0ul1znhwxgS6k02kcEOX09yHaEfhq0zSn99p5k8XXg-yE5gBe2Qgzv3oySwOGncEw8UwX11ZH1GocNPC2TshCyFr2vcGislALNtsqtZ1H/s1600/var4.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="398" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRPUtTPW3fCg6rx2Zxb-yhKZtG9JnMHR0z-3h0ul1znhwxgS6k02kcEOX09yHaEfhq0zSn99p5k8XXg-yE5gBe2Qgzv3oySwOGncEw8UwX11ZH1GocNPC2TshCyFr2vcGislALNtsqtZ1H/s400/var4.png" width="400" /></a><br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
This is one example if black attempts to separate white. Black has his own weaknesses and it's easy for white to live both groups comfortably. Black risk having his core territory destroyed.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=3961681589523853075" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyKpMYolZAInuXBPUdiGkVReIpbQ2nYHmcnOnnWFC3Es2ELqA9-LMv3L3jwqfGbu7oql6lR5Gbr376xD9JYw1UUO1ZYSRMyig4DdCuv-Dg0wwfdcu8T0r2_CD41GYbfzv2l-Md6XFuq02y/s1600/var5.png" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="395" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyKpMYolZAInuXBPUdiGkVReIpbQ2nYHmcnOnnWFC3Es2ELqA9-LMv3L3jwqfGbu7oql6lR5Gbr376xD9JYw1UUO1ZYSRMyig4DdCuv-Dg0wwfdcu8T0r2_CD41GYbfzv2l-Md6XFuq02y/s400/var5.png" width="400" /></a>\\<br />
<br />
In the game, black tried to separate white from another direction with 1 and 3. White 4 is a move I am proud of! It forces black to give in with black 5. After white 6 block, no matter where black chooses to cut, white's position in upper-right board is very flexible and active.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgE7pDHYophaG7W-hghQwq8PLDtphc-QF-HSI0Fhlo4iiG__suxbc0zP0ZQ1wpNT_ssIporNrxde31VtjffarRegx3U7F03rXGsQpybO6OMG2b9SGmCeIyzMYOUrFnhMCduLzwc58t8H27F/s1600/var6.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="393" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgE7pDHYophaG7W-hghQwq8PLDtphc-QF-HSI0Fhlo4iiG__suxbc0zP0ZQ1wpNT_ssIporNrxde31VtjffarRegx3U7F03rXGsQpybO6OMG2b9SGmCeIyzMYOUrFnhMCduLzwc58t8H27F/s400/var6.png" width="400" /></a><br />

In retrospect, black 1 could be a better answer, fixing his owning weakness first. White may jump at 2, to put pressure on multiple black groups. It will be a very interesting fight from this position.<br />

It's that time of the year again -- the annual Ottawa Cup Go Tournament at the end of April. I was glad to see lots of friends, and happy with both my result (2nd place in Group A) and the contents of my 3 games. Tournament photo credits to Jean-Sebastien Lechasseur.<br />
<br />
<br />
Game #1 was a tight game against Kevin the rising star.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhY6WywApWKWIsXFY71Yf56AG15ZYzmil18479MoO-495UHTeIRg1Uzb84dC65ofp_7DQwXEgj3i3jaA84AerutME-Fwl1xn5XUUhN7wEWDmfdJumKCjcFDrCnt1Ous_kZaEgWiUKTZT4JS/s1600/cup5.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="297" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhY6WywApWKWIsXFY71Yf56AG15ZYzmil18479MoO-495UHTeIRg1Uzb84dC65ofp_7DQwXEgj3i3jaA84AerutME-Fwl1xn5XUUhN7wEWDmfdJumKCjcFDrCnt1Ous_kZaEgWiUKTZT4JS/s400/cup5.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />

Game #2 against fast-improving young Dimitri<br />
<br />

<br />
Game #3 In the final I faced Sarah Yu 6d, a strong and experienced player<br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
I have played a few games with her online and know her strength. People say you would really sense strong players' power when playing them face-to-face, and that is absolutely true. She makes fewer errors especially at game-turning points.<br />
<br />
Although I lost, the game was decently played and I might have a couple missed chances.<br />
<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHf7jyYCx5sgEdGwrj8RT46wJuKyHCkC5ZVmHfdz05sVndljHqUHiFYG8X0Fbj5U3yXr74j4ac5_HUJngc-WfdWGG47rGsp8Nx5OwAMwYGnXuQROLs0Le1AiDDuep7a1Cx_hDi6Ps9sA8Z/s1600/hanxi-sarahyu-middlegame.png" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHf7jyYCx5sgEdGwrj8RT46wJuKyHCkC5ZVmHfdz05sVndljHqUHiFYG8X0Fbj5U3yXr74j4ac5_HUJngc-WfdWGG47rGsp8Nx5OwAMwYGnXuQROLs0Le1AiDDuep7a1Cx_hDi6Ps9sA8Z/s400/hanxi-sarahyu-middlegame.png" width="397" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
This was a scenario in our game. I was white. I fixed my dragon with white 1, and black 2 also had to fix the centre. Then I would spend a move in upper-left corner to secure some territory and keep the game balanced. These were all in my plan, steady and peaceful like the ways of some old generation Japanese players.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3wCqP4yVgHnHu7txf2-4CINMhxHg325Lh1C1715XGPjp0DIyqcZyitGxBI_3gkgyNHgwlpGDuo2QVmgtkyorr3M8PoY4QYkaDZWPK9MR4TknW35RiKidTe9ABh7jx8PyULJTz_T3S3Aao/s1600/hanxi-sarahyu-var1.png" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3wCqP4yVgHnHu7txf2-4CINMhxHg325Lh1C1715XGPjp0DIyqcZyitGxBI_3gkgyNHgwlpGDuo2QVmgtkyorr3M8PoY4QYkaDZWPK9MR4TknW35RiKidTe9ABh7jx8PyULJTz_T3S3Aao/s400/hanxi-sarahyu-var1.png" width="397" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
In fact, white could play the push move as shown above. Due to the shortage of liberty with black's centre stones, and the unnecessary triangle exchange a bit earlier, it's hard for black to block white. That means significant reduction of black's centre territory, and black needs to be mindful of his safety in the lower-left quarter board. In the mean time, white's dragon is safe because black's top and centre are not strong enough to kill white. So white 1 push is an active and efficient play that's appropriate at this exact moment.<br />

<br />
<br />
A game I played about a year ago; I was black. White has just cut black. What should black do now?<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnaOm8JKeAujQzB4eqZMRIzwIHdiMv7gy-RYydCPiv61yjRhSXiVhNiPbjYajGADBYgOO87QIIuZMQscZjWVPJaQyR8N3DrIAmGpZuJjJ4_uqJBxLHdNVGCVanQ0bGm9GzArFXONLNaWR0/s1600/game1-2.png" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnaOm8JKeAujQzB4eqZMRIzwIHdiMv7gy-RYydCPiv61yjRhSXiVhNiPbjYajGADBYgOO87QIIuZMQscZjWVPJaQyR8N3DrIAmGpZuJjJ4_uqJBxLHdNVGCVanQ0bGm9GzArFXONLNaWR0/s320/game1-2.png" width="317" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
This was my choice in the game. As usual, I couldn't resist the temptation to attack. White 6 & 8 are textbook approaches to sacrifice and get rhythm. As a result, black has to spend a move (15) to fix his own weakness. White 16 is a huge move. It's worth lots of points and keeps the pressure on black G-12 group, which now becomes weak. Black gets thickness in the centre. But because white bottom and right are both thick, that thickness is of limited value. Overall, black's whole attack initiative fails.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgABSt3nUgDa6ILW5wsLEL4VlIiRdNz5HKOO1S10KiequzMtUYWxvQ_TEhR6IBWn1As7eQWSBV72R3kEQAhCuij5GAJSD79mSsIEiCrsvuq-gjeJrVyRhPFOtSSqWXBtYit260BOgWp85fS/s1600/game1-3.png" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgABSt3nUgDa6ILW5wsLEL4VlIiRdNz5HKOO1S10KiequzMtUYWxvQ_TEhR6IBWn1As7eQWSBV72R3kEQAhCuij5GAJSD79mSsIEiCrsvuq-gjeJrVyRhPFOtSSqWXBtYit260BOgWp85fS/s320/game1-3.png" width="320" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
This is my reflection. The fact is overall white is thick, and it is premature for black to attack. The B-14 is not only a cash move. It settles down black G-14 group, and aims at follow-ups like A through D on white's left. Also the squared white cutting stone automatically becomes weaker, with a threat from black as if saying: 'I am alive with points, what about you?'. In fact, the squared black stone is nicely positioned to prevent the squared white cutting stone from connecting.<br />
<br />
The net result will be much better than the game. Compared to an hastily attack, it often pays off by simply drawing the archer and accumulate power, and shoot only when the target has come closer and expose its weakness.<br />
<br />
Happy new year!<br />

Last weekend some local Chinese Go players had another party at Lao Ruan's Quizno's store.<br />
Lao Ruan kindly calls for a party like this a few times a year. For most people it's the main occasion to play face-to-face games with fellow Go friends.<br />

Usually Lao Ruan is busy with his business in the store and can only play a game or two after the peak hours. This time he decided to give Li Jun a serious challenge. Somehow this became a group participation game. Both players constantly got comment and suggestions from people around the board. We not only wanted to help Lao Ruan out but also make the game entertaining. At move 189 the game seemed won by black. However that's the where the best part started, and the following fight was very nice. In the end white caught up a lot but black managed to maintain a lead of about 10 points on board. It's a game full of laughters and the funnest one in recent memory.<br />
<br />
Thanks Jun for providing kifu. He also found out a way for white to live locally, at move 220.<br />

I participated in the 2015 Ottawa Go Tournament this weekend. It's great to see lots of Go friends as usual. The competition is fierce in group 1 with almost all top players from Ottawa and Montreal regions present. Congratulations to champion Manuel Velasco! He beat 3 strong players and won convincingly. Considering he also won Montreal Winter Cup last year, his recent good run reminds me of Spanish national soccer team who won the World and European champions in a row.<br />

<br />
Even I lost 2 out of 3 games, I tried my best and was content with the quality of all 3 games. Here are some highlights.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipqrz3AhBtDSqH_XlwAIuyBnyK7UFEUMyhMw0OUzSRW4XYIx5oF3IU8Z8z6OE87V7r9rMc46INYQUHLyJDyfj_WBDbkjjcCANltkC6UyrzB5mpJjytH_xH5RBBLAalSxM4nd9Jb3BWKApB/s1600/jiaping-hx.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipqrz3AhBtDSqH_XlwAIuyBnyK7UFEUMyhMw0OUzSRW4XYIx5oF3IU8Z8z6OE87V7r9rMc46INYQUHLyJDyfj_WBDbkjjcCANltkC6UyrzB5mpJjytH_xH5RBBLAalSxM4nd9Jb3BWKApB/s1600/jiaping-hx.png" height="320" width="319" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
This is my game #1. I was black. Game is still early but due to some mistakes black's central dragon is in serious trouble amid white's influences. Black 1 attachment and 3 counter-hane seem a good way to make eye shape. White has a bit of weakness too and it is not easy to find a safe way to kill black. In the game white let black live and won the game by good judgement and endgame plays.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsyxIpycLzHB1ovPoPZxEX7Y-aMyTdGBUshrMQ8A2mIuJhAWtUbzYDyyG00kOZdsToZ7FVYNrgnNOAffYwUTt9v7SAMGoEDX9z1s_6WmGfrw6qNLaIV0V0u3px7gKd8WZvmKMLuEOtq7tb/s1600/hanxi-jun-var1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsyxIpycLzHB1ovPoPZxEX7Y-aMyTdGBUshrMQ8A2mIuJhAWtUbzYDyyG00kOZdsToZ7FVYNrgnNOAffYwUTt9v7SAMGoEDX9z1s_6WmGfrw6qNLaIV0V0u3px7gKd8WZvmKMLuEOtq7tb/s1600/hanxi-jun-var1.png" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
Game #3. I was black against local Go friend and rival Jun Li. We have played lots of games since early 2000's. Jun is no doubt stronger but I always try to show good fighting spirit and resistance. Our recent games tend to be decided by my success or failure to kill his dragons.<br />
<br /></div>
I played san-ren-sei opening this time. I decided to give up territory and go all-in for attack and kill, since I am always behind in territory against Jun anyway. But when white 1 extends, I am puzzled and don't know how to continue the attack, and the game seems hard for black. San-ren-sei opening is hard and you often find yourself behind playing all the seemingly right local moves.<br />
<br />
After spending about 10 of the total 60 minutes time allowance, I played black 2 invasion, which seemed to me like the only move. The idea is, it may be overplaying locally. However if black can use it as a sacrifice and create some sentes in surrounding areas, white's weak group on the right may die naturally.<br />
<br />
As expected, a very complex global war erupted with the black invasion. This is what happened later:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjt82Iqn1P5JeGyq0n6uivLpteyNChho8n3sVKwApA8_K11ncNpmbT0f6PNyx524oyGP4xEWCLl-Q17yoPaVZJF5hvw5Kg4kq7eqi5IzAWJ63tjqJ8u_T0GcCyXwgeJvMyj-NJ3vV17Wk2Z/s1600/hanxi-jun-var2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjt82Iqn1P5JeGyq0n6uivLpteyNChho8n3sVKwApA8_K11ncNpmbT0f6PNyx524oyGP4xEWCLl-Q17yoPaVZJF5hvw5Kg4kq7eqi5IzAWJ63tjqJ8u_T0GcCyXwgeJvMyj-NJ3vV17Wk2Z/s1600/hanxi-jun-var2.png" height="318" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Black paid a very high price on the left and died epically. In return, I did get some sentes in centre and what I wanted in the first place: capturing white's right. There are still lots of ajis with the white dragon and black really should have fixed them if in the lead. I had only about 10 minutes left and based on my count, the game is getting close and black has to play Q-17 big move to have any chance. That is the right judgement except I missed the atari at A and a couple other sente moves in the centre before playing Q-17. Eventually white managed to live the dragon by making good use of ajis in the bottom right area, and won the game.<br />
<br />
It is quite an epic game! Black might have some ways to fight more severely after black 65 invasion. I have added some variations in the game record shown below.<br />
<br />
<span class="webkit-html-tag" style="font-family: monospace; white-space: pre-wrap;"><embed flashvars="url=jun-hanxi-ottawacup15.sgf" height="600" src="https://sites.google.com/site/hanxizhang/goswf.swf" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="440"></embed><span id="goog_289079835"></span><span id="goog_289079836"></span><a href="http://www.blogger.com/"></a></span>Hanxihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15108430859396172316noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3961681589523853075.post-54857377991543108642014-12-02T18:20:00.003-08:002014-12-02T18:22:48.140-08:00Brillance of Go Seigen<br />
After a long and spectacular life, Mr. Go Seigen (吴清源) passed away at the grand age of 100.<br />
<br />
When I first read about his Ju-Bang-Go stories, I did not play Go yet. I couldn't help but wonder: what are these players spending 10+ hours a day, staring at the 19x19 board thinking about?<br />
<br />
In the late 90's, I watched a Chinese TV documentary about 80+ years old Wu visiting his family house in Fujian, which he had left in childhood. It is very touchy to see Wu introducing himself gently to occupants of the house who were all strangers.<br />
<br />
There are too many brilliant moments in Go Seigen's games. I remember two in particular.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpsyLYwwOnKI7oUSjEQkGe6lZXF_VvODv5pOnatgMoSh6BOhbmTODDzyvfA0MAC_qt7WMp-Ld7B5DllP42x-k3IujO2hMFXkoWKCz9b9zhcSpXyLeH2b6Q2YWTxPDcH6DB-mvHPokzyHhx/s1600/wu-rin1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpsyLYwwOnKI7oUSjEQkGe6lZXF_VvODv5pOnatgMoSh6BOhbmTODDzyvfA0MAC_qt7WMp-Ld7B5DllP42x-k3IujO2hMFXkoWKCz9b9zhcSpXyLeH2b6Q2YWTxPDcH6DB-mvHPokzyHhx/s320/wu-rin1.png" height="320" width="319" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Go Seigen taking white against Rin Haiho in Meijin league in 1963. There are more black stones than white stones on the right side. White's 1-3-5 moves seem random walking, to me anyways.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiw63mntlypYFyHpFNJzzHZbYT1MkSSEtgwOv-aEUOAAaRetNGW1q5T_Pv7oPlkEYzhcnZrUvlgCSMUocy2p1-GPrYS5XDZHKNk7Qd3N3ifW-NAMmqA7sJ13o2MJ-3KcIGRLscl50j1CYNf/s1600/wu-rin2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiw63mntlypYFyHpFNJzzHZbYT1MkSSEtgwOv-aEUOAAaRetNGW1q5T_Pv7oPlkEYzhcnZrUvlgCSMUocy2p1-GPrYS5XDZHKNk7Qd3N3ifW-NAMmqA7sJ13o2MJ-3KcIGRLscl50j1CYNf/s320/wu-rin2.png" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Continued from previous diagram. White's random walk continues, and it's still very hard to understand. What white achieves in the game is astonishing: even though white has fewer stones, through global correlation, white is able to pressure 4 black groups: two in the bottom, right and upper right corner! Any mistake by black is the result of great pressures from white's "global attacks". It is hard to imagine how much white has read and planned, from a peaceful and simple state in the game.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgELzCPXQLR86hOxMT4SAfBErBipvO2rCnCkC0z1ERgJ4xMitx-aPaiAIktxakTP55Qj1-DqVFGSX727Ni2Ghf1A2RbDE0StfhKNR4T9a0ByeIiuup4zKCIFhEf-bnf5S4xs9ovrLhcqhrK/s1600/wu-sakata.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgELzCPXQLR86hOxMT4SAfBErBipvO2rCnCkC0z1ERgJ4xMitx-aPaiAIktxakTP55Qj1-DqVFGSX727Ni2Ghf1A2RbDE0StfhKNR4T9a0ByeIiuup4zKCIFhEf-bnf5S4xs9ovrLhcqhrK/s320/wu-sakata.png" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Go Seigen taking white against Sakata Eio in game 7 of their Ju-Bang-Go. Most people would feel upset when black triangle move gets the vital point and limits white's moyo. White 1/3 moves are pure stroke of genius. You may have exercised all the problems in Igo Hatsuyoron, but do you have such imagination?<br />
<br />
Most would agree that Go's dedication to the game and his pure mind contributed to his longevity. If there is only one Saint out of Go players of all times, it has to be him. RIP Go Sensei!<br />

I often have the experience that I did well in a local fight, but lost the game. Here is yet another good example. It's a recent online tournament game. I was black.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHKw8y8bbh6YaA2J8-MJGtkmuFeM4toBhiNG1ciVHWxxa4AHGVGILkN731-wNy6ecXr_GwX0-JsqNc7BxJU6r41Ankk694bHNspjURA-75bxDI0mJlLy04JJmVIpNP9aRCtVtuF6dDLPch/s1600/study1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHKw8y8bbh6YaA2J8-MJGtkmuFeM4toBhiNG1ciVHWxxa4AHGVGILkN731-wNy6ecXr_GwX0-JsqNc7BxJU6r41Ankk694bHNspjURA-75bxDI0mJlLy04JJmVIpNP9aRCtVtuF6dDLPch/s320/study1.png" /></a></div><br />
<br />
As shown, black's left group is not settled down yet. Black 1-3-5 are probing moves. To answer black 5, white is not willing to play ko at A, because of black's local threats at B and C. Furthermore, white thinks black 5 is a mistake, and he has gotten black 5 with the white 6 descent. If this was a face to face game, I wonder if I could keep a poker face after playing black 5 -- it is tricky.<br />
<br />

<br />
Black 1 push is good timing. If black plays this push later, white likely will not block at 2. Black 3 is planned, and it works because of the black 9 tesuji!<br />
<br />

</span> <span class="webkit-html-tag" style="font-family: monospace; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br />
White has no choice but give up 3 white stones. At the end of this local fight, black's weak group lives in sente with points, and reduces white's bottom. It's a very good result for black, for sure.</span><br />
<span class="webkit-html-tag" style="font-family: monospace; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br />
</span><span class="webkit-html-tag" style="font-family: monospace; white-space: pre-wrap;">However, the game is far from over. Black's opening is not that good, and even black gains in this local fight, the lead is actually not that big. In the game my judgement was overly optimistic. I played some questionable end game moves, end ended up losing by 1.5 points. </span><br />
<span class="webkit-html-tag" style="font-family: monospace; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br />
</span> <span class="webkit-html-tag" style="font-family: monospace; white-space: pre-wrap;">It's as if the 20 moves or so of reading in this local fight had taken all my energy and concentration. I feel that to turn this leading game into a won game, it takes not only good control and end game skills, but also great patience and a professional attitude. That is a bit too much to ask of me, so I don't blame myself too much!</span><br />
<span class="webkit-html-tag" style="font-family: monospace; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br />

Again due to life priorities, no blogging for me in a while, and I find it hard to put mind in Go.<br />
<br />
Until this weekend morning, I stumbled upon this brilliant game between Andy Liu and Zi-yang Hu in 2014 US Go congress. I am not really at a level to pick on their games, but this game simply touched me. <br />
<br />
I am one of those admirers of Andy's speedy, highly-efficient and powerful style. However in this game, he was completely controlled by black's natural and reasonable play. The flow of the game overall is simple and without much complicated stuff, maybe except the final blow in upper left corner. <br />
<br />
To me this is a good example of the ultimate winning style in tournaments.<br />
<br />
<span class="webkit-html-tag" style="font-family: monospace; white-space: pre-wrap;"><embed flashvars="url=andy-ziyang.sgf" height="600" src="https://sites.google.com/site/hanxizhang/goswf.swf" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="440"></embed><span id="goog_289079835"></span><span id="goog_289079836"></span><a href="http://www.blogger.com/"></a></span>Hanxihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15108430859396172316noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3961681589523853075.post-60986279184815272762014-03-16T18:47:00.003-07:002014-03-16T18:48:43.107-07:00Old player's bragging right<br />
This is a 5x10sec blitz game I played recently with a KGS friend, who is decades younger.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
One of my weaknesses is the obsession to kill stones -- when it works out it's really fun. Pros</div>
<div>
often say the power to fight/kill should be used as a threat, and at more advanced levels players</div>
<div>
tend to sacrifice as opposed to kill. I agree with that totally, however for now I'll enjoy another</div>
<div>
big kill as a bragging right.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The kill starts at move 73, and I did not even waste one 10 sec period until the end. White may </div>
<div>
have been able to escape but overall it is difficult for him. The moves for black are not that hard.</div>
<div>
Considering it's a blitz game, my focus and determination are worth some shameless self promotion. If I can put heart on things like this, I may be able to achieve more.</div>
<div>
<br />

Long time no post and and happy new year!<br />
I finally have the time and mood to write another technical post.<br />
<br />
I'd like to show our readers two game scenarios, in which two<br />
best moves are presented. I'll let you decide which move is<br />
more advanced.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEgU_Y4aHBTtBvbuKwRIWv4XfJoaWNzmYDJNZ24sT-ZUUn0u_vnU9voBjFGkEzQ9Zu-eH5CKP7Vow0BjFAvs0wwvwMhrBlWG8dRTdLUtIAjTrqn8nZxNEcmcqShqYtKMavqWwyHnzjq67i/s1600/sample1-feb8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEgU_Y4aHBTtBvbuKwRIWv4XfJoaWNzmYDJNZ24sT-ZUUn0u_vnU9voBjFGkEzQ9Zu-eH5CKP7Vow0BjFAvs0wwvwMhrBlWG8dRTdLUtIAjTrqn8nZxNEcmcqShqYtKMavqWwyHnzjq67i/s320/sample1-feb8.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: -webkit-auto;">
Scenario A</div>
<div style="text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: justify;">As shown above, black 1 is a strong move, aiming to deprive of </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: justify;">white </span>bottom's base, and attack white bottom as a whole. Note </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
that black has lots of ko threats in upper-left. Depending on the </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
situation, black can either net at C, or play A/B in sente during </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
the attack. Black 1 is a good-feeling move; it's not easy for white</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
to counter attack because of the burden in upper-left.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRYJ0PiOTJQDCiKG9pL-PUVMqxnmYKtjCc6H6E3Q_qFmbWH7EJqI3IXLbJK83dHe5qfv6NyioK6ozTgtD5Gu68INYrvRE03eNXxk8ayU54JylIBn9A5bNkJXS2mKnHk-cPX0cbbIrtThDX/s1600/sample2-feb8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRYJ0PiOTJQDCiKG9pL-PUVMqxnmYKtjCc6H6E3Q_qFmbWH7EJqI3IXLbJK83dHe5qfv6NyioK6ozTgtD5Gu68INYrvRE03eNXxk8ayU54JylIBn9A5bNkJXS2mKnHk-cPX0cbbIrtThDX/s1600/sample2-feb8.jpg" height="320" width="319" /></a></div>

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Scenario B<br />
<br />
As shown above. Black just jumped; although it's early<br />
in the game, the battle is already fierce and complex. What<br />
should white do?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHTtap3hl9fBt_L3QfzTz8Sqb_t-rZ-Eh4jBKGa045HPdnFGc499I4Akppb_no-fHNGF3O56fxNqCom4moZYLDrOSNV11gqOcD9bLNObjFkhQehGqhoIiVVXzW1Qjk-aUN8SO84Chyxe-h/s1600/sample3-feb8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHTtap3hl9fBt_L3QfzTz8Sqb_t-rZ-Eh4jBKGa045HPdnFGc499I4Akppb_no-fHNGF3O56fxNqCom4moZYLDrOSNV11gqOcD9bLNObjFkhQehGqhoIiVVXzW1Qjk-aUN8SO84Chyxe-h/s1600/sample3-feb8.jpg" height="319" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
White 1 push is a no brainer and impulsive "sente" move.<br />
However, the white 1 black 2 exchange hurts white centre<br />
group, which in turn gives black less pressure on his left group.<br />
On the other hand, if sealed inside, white's group on top is still<br />
quite uncomfortable. After black 4, there is a sense that black has<br />
one weak group while white has two.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6QtvsQ0q6gE01klXK1dR3qX5WEjy-JRoZk06kZ4I6-TXCc3VG7bZR86hA3rrocwl5Wry08FgJA4dd6bx7CtSwAilaWIgBAy9NgGFZvfTBpaqKwIhe2u2j19Bnq0kWYOtdy49k0X8ysG7g/s1600/sample4-feb8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6QtvsQ0q6gE01klXK1dR3qX5WEjy-JRoZk06kZ4I6-TXCc3VG7bZR86hA3rrocwl5Wry08FgJA4dd6bx7CtSwAilaWIgBAy9NgGFZvfTBpaqKwIhe2u2j19Bnq0kWYOtdy49k0X8ysG7g/s1600/sample4-feb8.jpg" height="320" width="319" /></a></div>

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
White 1 is the move in real game. The idea is to strengthen<br />
white's centre group first (without the push/extend exchange),<br />
and let black decide which side he wants. In the real game,<br />
because white's centre group is stronger, black's group on left<br />
feels the pressure, so he chooses to strengthen the group through<br />
moves 2-6. In return white 7 captures two black stones and<br />
a compromise is reached in this local battle. I slightly prefer<br />
white.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhe4fyeK95ekz5RZ8F1cJTHxW1ZirdOvYggGiHGU-Lg-ySVv__gw57Dbafnr-eqN6h4JHaIlj30jyr1FI2z-DGlwfEdtuHZP3ZfhN8EHQ03u-2vTXEbe8KS5zsn7oUUFe3JU79xdhHwZlEv/s1600/sample5-feb8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhe4fyeK95ekz5RZ8F1cJTHxW1ZirdOvYggGiHGU-Lg-ySVv__gw57Dbafnr-eqN6h4JHaIlj30jyr1FI2z-DGlwfEdtuHZP3ZfhN8EHQ03u-2vTXEbe8KS5zsn7oUUFe3JU79xdhHwZlEv/s1600/sample5-feb8.jpg" height="318" width="320" /></a></div>

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
This is what black is concerned if he chooses to move<br />
two stones.<br />
<br />
Conclusion<br />
<br />
As you may have guessed, both scenarios are from my<br />
own games, and both best moves are relative to my level<br />
and knowledge.<br />
<br />
I am trying to make a point. One of the hard aspect of Go<br />
is to find a balance and compromise in complex and subtle<br />
situations. In that sense, the black 1 move in Scenario A is<br />
simple, since it's a one-sided attack. The white 1 kosumi<br />
in Scenario B is not sharp but gentle and balanced. I spent<br />
quite some time on it during the game, and both the game and<br />
the move are memorable.<br />

<br />
This is a game between Seo Bongsoo 9p (white) and Kobayashi Koichi 9p (black) in 1993's Fujisu Cup. Seo seemed determined to challenge Kobayashi's yose skill, so we end up seeing a peaceful game atypical of Seo's "wild grass" fighting style. For those who are familiar with the history of the professional Go history, Kobayashi's yose and positional judgement skills were top among pro players at that time.<br />
<br />
Seo did fairly well and as the game approached end game, it remained very close. In fact, he only lost by 1.5 with 5.5 points komi. As shown above, white answered black's A squeeze with B. Did he have to?!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWBExok3HYH3oetZ5xGDF3rWLjG6xkYRMWqRWjV6e6ARp29KONnqn24A_sz3mXhydIrLd0-NCpanPdBzvvTnlDnUXE18TlfXJtM3saKsTvfVDEN5nu8kJ_nvgqlpVh63hC_7iesBZRYkpi/s1600/var2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWBExok3HYH3oetZ5xGDF3rWLjG6xkYRMWqRWjV6e6ARp29KONnqn24A_sz3mXhydIrLd0-NCpanPdBzvvTnlDnUXE18TlfXJtM3saKsTvfVDEN5nu8kJ_nvgqlpVh63hC_7iesBZRYkpi/s320/var2.png" width="309" /></a></div><br />
If w ignores, black 1,3 are to be expected. After white 4, black seems to be short in liberty ... but black 9 is the killing move! Locally it's a very unfavourable ko for white. If white 4 jumps at 6 (2-2) instead, it will also be a ko that's heavy for white and free for black.<br />
<br />
Both players must have seen black 9, and it must be with regret when white answered at B in the previous diagram, knowing he would lose by a very small margin.<br />

Let's call it the game of copy-cats due to some copy-cat moves played by both with a good sense of humour.<br />
<br />
Main point of discussion: black move 25.<br />
<br />
I must say it's a very interesting and complex whole board problem even though it's early in the game. I've put enough thoughts based on my limited strength.<br />

<span class="webkit-html-tag" style="font-family: monospace; white-space: pre-wrap;">I visited the local Outago Club the other day and played a game with Pierre-Olivier, a dedicated local player. The opening was quite interesting -- relaxed and daring. Other than the 3 tournament games in Montreal, this is my first game played face to face in 2013.</span></div>

A gathering of strong players in the region, good friendships, beautiful tournament venue -- what more can a Go player ask for?<br />

</span> <span class="webkit-html-tag" style="font-family: monospace; white-space: pre-wrap;">In round 2, I was paired with Remi. I lost the game but was glad that it did not appear Remi can give me 2 stones after his training in BIBA Korea, :) </span><span style="font-family: monospace; white-space: pre-wrap;">On the technical side, I played the game with good fighting spirit. I don't like certain moves/choices I made, and at my level it is also hard to do better. </span><span style="font-family: monospace; white-space: pre-wrap;">For those interested, I have marked up the game with lots of variation and commentaries.</span><br />

</span> <span style="font-family: monospace;"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">I have participated in the tournament 4 years in a row since 2010. Every time I got paired with James Sedgwick 6d. Now it is clear mid-aged players like James and myself will face tough head-wind battle against strong young players in the region: Daniel, Remi, Manuel, and so on. </span></span><br />

<div style="text-align: start;">
<span style="font-family: monospace;"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">This game was an under-advertised great fighting game, played between Jowa and his rival, Inoue Genan Inseki(</span></span>井上因碩幻庵<span style="font-family: monospace; white-space: pre-wrap;">). The scale, intensity of fights and amount of readings involved are overwhelming. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: monospace;"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;"> </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: monospace;"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">This game was played in 1814, and was one of the many unofficial matches between the pair of rivals </span></span><span style="font-family: monospace; white-space: pre-wrap;">early in their careers. Throughout the game you can clearly see bad bloods were </span><span style="font-family: monospace; white-space: pre-wrap;">accumulating between the pair, as they both tried to destroy each other. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: monospace;"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;"> </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: monospace;"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Black 113 and 115 are brilliant moves. However a couple mistakes later in the large-scale semeai costed black the game.</span></span></div>

<span class="webkit-html-tag" style="font-family: monospace;"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Honinbo Jowa had a reputation of being the most ruthless fighter.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: monospace; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br />
</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: monospace; white-space: pre-wrap;">Besides the famous "blood-vomiting" game, I have 3 favourite games played </span><span style="font-family: monospace; white-space: pre-wrap;">by him. Simply put, his play was just too powerful. At my level it is not </span><span style="font-family: monospace; white-space: pre-wrap;">feasible to truly understand or comment on these complex games. Nonetheless, </span><span style="font-family: monospace; white-space: pre-wrap;">it makes good studying materials. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: monospace; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: monospace;"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">The first two of these 3 games were h-2 games against amateur player Shinomiya Yonezo. </span></span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I stumbled upon this old game of mine played in year 2000 on IGS.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The opponent I played was no doubt a pro, rumoured to be Kobayashi Koichi 9p.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
My heartbeat speeded up when he accepted the game -- such an honour! :)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It was a fast game (25 moves per 5 min?). When reviewing now, I don't understand</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
why I missed B-16 atari. Although black didn't get any big group killed, you can<br />
see how a pro bullies an amateur player and deprives him of points on board.</div>
